Spotlight - Kenney Blakeney

This week on The Zone Podcast our feature guest will be Kenney Blakeney, the men’s basketball coach for Howard University, one of the most prominent HBCUs in the country.

Coach Blakeney is originally from Washington D.C., playing his high school basketball at DeMatha Catholic High School. After becoming the Gatorade Player of the Year in Maryland, he committed to playing under Coach Mike Krzyzewski at Duke University. There he was a part of two championship squads and became team captain in his senior year.

After graduating from Duke in 1995, Coach Blakeney began his coaching career as an assistant at James Madison. He has been an assistant coach on seven different collegiate teams. His longest stints include seven years at Delaware, and four years at Harvard. In 2019 he was hired as head coach of the Howard men’s basketball team.

In this week's podcast Coach Blakeney talks with our host Ivan Tchatchouwo about the possibility of high-profile prospects committing to HBCUs and the possible impact of that decision, as well as what he and other college coaches look for in an athlete when recruiting.
